A dangerous trend on TikTok has claimed another victim, this time leaving a 16-year-old boy severely disfigured.

Following the viral Benadryl challenge that led to a boy’s death in Ohio, a group of teens in North Carolina attempted to create a makeshift torch using a spray paint can and a lighter as part of a TikTok challenge.

However, the attempt resulted in an explosion that caused third-degree burns covering almost 80% of the boy’s body. The victim, identified as Mason Dark, is now unrecognizable, according to his mother, Holli Dark.

The incident serves as a warning of the dangerous consequences of participating in viral challenges on social media platforms.

Mason Dark, a teenager from Wake Forest, North Carolina, suffered severe burns while attempting a TikTok challenge with his friends.

The challenge involved creating a makeshift torch using a spray paint can and a lighter. However, the can exploded and engulfed Mason in flames, causing third-degree burns covering 76% of his body. His attempts to soothe the burns in a nearby river only worsened his condition, leaving him with charred skin and a high risk of infection from the river water.

Mason was rushed to the UNC Burn Center and underwent surgery on April 26 to receive skin grafts for the long healing process ahead.

Mason Dark has undergone several surgeries for skin grafts to treat the 75% of his body that suffered severe burns. Despite the slow healing process, his mother remains hopeful that her son will eventually recover.

In the meantime, his grandmother has set up a GoFundMe page to help support his medical expenses. A note from Mason’s mother on the page explains that the accident occurred on April 23, 2023, while attempting a TikTok challenge that went wrong. Mason jumped into a nearby river to extinguish the flames, but the risk of infection from the river water is high.

He is currently being treated at the UNC Burn Center in Chapel Hill, which is known for its expertise in burn treatment. Mason’s recovery process is expected to be long, and his family asks for prayers for his healing and comfort, as he is currently in a lot of pain and is sedated. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of participating in viral challenges on social media platforms.
