Washington: Richard Verma, former US Ambassador to India, has been sworn in as the Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources, becoming the highest-ranking Indian-American ever in the State Department.

Verma, a lawyer, diplomat, and executive, was confirmed by the US Senate with a vote of 67-26. He previously served as the US Ambassador to India, Chief Legal Officer, and Head of Global Public Policy at Mastercard, and Assistant Secretary of State for Legislative Affairs during the Barack Obama administration.
Verma has an extensive background in government, law, and international affairs, including serving as a veteran of the US Air Force. He holds multiple degrees, including a PhD, and has received numerous awards and decorations for his service. Verma is also involved in various boards and organizations, including The Ford Foundation and the National Endowment for Democracy
