In a thrilling Durand Cup 2023 final, Mohun Bagan Super Giant emerged victorious over arch-rivals East Bengal with a narrow 1-0 scoreline. This win not only ended their 23-year title drought but also solidified their status as the most successful team in the history of the prestigious tournament, claiming their 17th championship.
The match itself was a nail-biter, showcasing the prowess of both teams. Dimitri Petratos became the hero of the day, delivering a spectacular strike in the 71st minute to seal the deal for Mohun Bagan. However, the victory wasn’t without its challenges, as the team was reduced to 10 men following Anirudh Thapa’s red card in the 62nd minute.
Despite East Bengal enjoying a numerical advantage, they failed to capitalize on the situation. East Bengal managed six shots on target compared to Mohun Bagan’s single shot, but the latter held on to secure the win, displaying remarkable resilience.
Despite their commendable efforts, East Bengal fell short of securing their first major title since the 2018 IFA Shield. With 16 titles to their name, they remain the second-most successful team in Durand Cup history.
The Durand Cup 2023 was a grand affair, featuring 24 teams competing for the coveted title, an increase from the previous year’s 20. The tournament commenced on August 3rd and culminated in a thrilling final that reignited the age-old rivalry between Mohun Bagan and East Bengal.
Mohun Bagan’s last taste of Durand Cup victory had been in 2000, having reached the finals thrice since then (in 2004, 2009, and 2019) but falling short on each occasion. The victory in 2023 marked a significant milestone for Mohun Bagan Super Giant, reaffirming their status as one of the powerhouses of Indian football.
