After the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) won their record-equalling fifth Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy, the Gujarat Titans paid tribute to MS Dhoni, the team’s captain.
In a thrilling rain-affected IPL 2023 final, CSK emerged triumphant by five wickets against GT. The match was postponed to the reserve day due to heavy rain, with CSK chasing a revised target of 171 in 15 overs.
In their tribute, the Gujarat Titans tweeted, “Vhala Thala, We knew we’d have to battle not just against your genius, but also the sea of #Yellove in this fairytale final. Although we’re disappointed tonight, the child within us is still elated to witness you lifting that trophy.”
Gujarat Titans set an impressive total of 214 for four, fueled by B Sai Sudharsan’s stunning knock of 96 off 47 balls.
However, rain interrupted the game and CSK’s target was adjusted. CSK began their chase in blazing fashion, with Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway smashing 74 runs in just 6.3 overs.
Despite losing quick wickets, CSK stayed in the hunt, thanks to Shivam Dube’s unbeaten 32.
The final over arrived with CSK needing 13 runs for victory, creating a sense of uncertainty. But Ravindra Jadeja turned the tables by smashing a six and a four off the last two balls, guiding CSK to a thrilling win.
With this victory, CSK has equaled the record for the most IPL titles, joining their arch-rivals Mumbai Indians.
The final match held additional significance as it was speculated to be Dhoni’s last game. The fans, who packed the Narendra Modi Stadium, witnessed Dhoni’s strategic brilliance throughout the tournament.
Despite a knee injury, Dhoni displayed exceptional skills both as a wicketkeeper and as a guiding force on the field.
