The wedding of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan with Bushra Bibi, solemnized by a cleric, was reported by The Express Tribune on Wednesday to have not been conducted in accordance with Islamic Sharia law.
The cleric stated that the wedding took place during Bushra Bibi’s iddat period, which is a three-month waiting period that Muslim women must observe after the death of their husband or dissolution of marriage.
Mufti Saeed, the cleric who officiated the nikkah (Islamic marriage ceremony) between former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi, stated that he was assured by a woman claiming to be Bushra’s sister that all Sharia requirements had been fulfilled.
The wedding took place on January 1, 2018, and the couple began living together in Islamabad. However, Imran Khan contacted Saeed in February 2018 requesting a repeat of the Nikkah. Saeed claims that Imran Khan informed him that Bushra’s iddat period had not been completed during the initial ceremony, as she had divorced Khawar Maneka in November 2017.
The cleric alleged that despite being aware of the situation, the former Pakistan PM and his wife had planned their wedding. The cleric also alleged that Imran Khan had confided in him, expressing a belief that marrying Bushra would lead to him becoming the prime minister.
Mufti Saeed disclosed details about the wedding of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi in court in response to a petition filed by Muhammad Hanif against the alleged ‘un-Islamic’ Nikkah. Saeed stated that Hanif approached him during Ramzan and inquired about the marriage, to which Saeed revealed what he knew in court.
Saeed, who holds the position of principal in a seminary and asserts a positive relationship with Imran Khan as well as being part of his core committee, alleged that he was taken by the former PM to Lahore’s Defence Housing Authority (DHA) to officiate the nikkah of Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi in 2018. The court has adjourned further hearings on the case until April 19.
