Trinamool Congress MP, Abhishek Banerjee, launched a scathing attack on the BJP during a rally in Alipurduar, focusing on various issues, with the non-payment of dues to Bengal being the most prominent. He demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the alleged “mismanagement” of funds in the 100-day-work programme.
Banerjee accused the BJP of using the Enforcement Directorate and CBI to target their political opponents, while withholding funds meant for the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA). He challenged the BJP to request the CBI to investigate any potential mismanagement of funds in the 100-day-work programme.
Banerjee expressed his determination to secure the funds that have been withheld by the central government for Bengal, stating, “Give me one crore signatures, and I will personally ensure that the funds are released from Delhi. We will protest in Delhi to demand our rightful dues.” He further criticized the BJP for taking issue with the usage of Bengal’s name in government schemes, saying, “If a Gram Sadak Yojana is implemented in Bengal, should it be called Bangla Sadak Yojana or PM Sadak Yojana?”
Banerjee accused the BJP of being vindictive since losing the 2021 elections. He rejected the term “Uttar Bongo” for North Bengal and emphasized that there is only Paschim Bongo or West Bengal. Banerjee also pointed out the change in headlines from “Abhishek goes to North Bengal” to “Abhishek in Alipurduar”, highlighting the kind of change they are seeking.
Banerjee criticized the BJP for seeking votes in the name of Balakot and religion instead of development. He questioned if there were no Hindus in danger before the BJP came to power and asked what Prime Minister Modi has done for them. Banerjee further challenged the notion that one can obtain free edible oil by simply chanting “BJP zindabad” or “Jai Shri Ram.”
