Delhi ministers Atishi and Saurabh Bhardwaj, members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), announced that Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal would continue running the Delhi government from jail if he were to be arrested in the near future.
This statement followed Kejriwal’s summoning by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a money laundering case related to the Delhi liquor policy. The AAP accused the Modi government of conspiring to imprison Kejriwal.
During a meeting with AAP legislators, Atishi revealed that they had advised Kejriwal not to resign in response to the ED summons, emphasizing that the people of Delhi had elected him as their Chief Minister.
The AAP even expressed the intention to request jail-based cabinet meetings. Kejriwal’s party raised concerns that the BJP aimed to target key Indian alliance leaders ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
The ED and the CBI are investigating the Delhi government’s former excise policy, alleging favoritism toward certain liquor dealers. Kejriwal and his party denied these allegations, asserting that the policy aimed to increase revenue shares.
